Enrollment <\/h2>\t\t\t

The Alabama Genomic Health Initiative (AGHI) offers opportunities for Alabama residents to participate in genomic research that may support their health and the health of future generations. While enrollment cannot be completed directly through the website, our team is here to help answer questions and guide you through the process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

AGHI Enrollment Cohorts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

AGHI currently supports two main cohorts<\/strong>. Each cohort has different goals and may yield different types of results, which are then returned to participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clinical Cohort<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t

Most AGHI participants are enrolled in the\u00a0clinical cohort<\/strong>. This group focuses on providing health-relevant genetic results that can help guide medical care.<\/p>\n

  • Who can join:<\/strong>\u00a0Adults (19+) who meet clinical eligibility requirements<\/li>\n
  • What is tested:<\/strong>\u00a0A focused set of genes known to be associated with\u00a0medically actionable<\/strong>\u00a0conditions<\/li>\n
  • What you may receive:<\/strong>\n
      \n
    • Results that could help guide medical care if an actionable genetic change is found<\/li>\n
    • Education and support from genetic counselors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Important note:<\/strong>\u00a0Whole genome sequencing is\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0performed in this cohort.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Rare Disease \/ Whole Genome Sequencing Cohort<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t

      This cohort supports individuals \u2014 both adults and children \u2014 with\u00a0suspected genetic conditions<\/strong>\u00a0that are not yet well-understood. Researchers use\u00a0whole-genome sequencing<\/strong>\u00a0to look deeper for possible answers.<\/p>\n

      • Who can join:<\/strong>\u00a0Adults and children with clinical indicators of a potential rare genetic disorder (referral required)<\/li>\n
      • What is tested:<\/strong>\u00a0The entire genome to identify rare or unknown genetic causes of disease<\/li>\n
      • What you may receive:<\/strong>\n

        • Results that may explain medical concerns<\/li>\n
        • Information to help guide medical care and future planning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

          What to Expect After You Contact Us<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

          1. We will confirm your eligibility and walk you through consent<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          2. A saliva or blood sample is collected at a partnering clinical site<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          3. Results are returned (if medically relevant), along with counseling and education<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          4. Participants may be contacted for ongoing research opportunities as science advances<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
